Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 47.5 km² (18.3 mi²). 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²) of it is land and 22.6 km² (8.7 mi²) of it is water.
The total area is 47.57% water, being an island. Grosse Ile is in fact the largest island on the Detroit River. It consists of two major islands (which comprise Grosse Ile) and several minor outlying islands. Two bridges connect the township to the mainland; the northern, often referred to as the "pay bridge", is a yellowish color, and the southern, the Wayne County Bridge (also known as the "free bridge") is a light green.
There are 4,122 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.8% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 17.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the township the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 34.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.0 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $87,062, and the median income for a family is $96,226. Males have a median income of $71,777 versus $42,430 for females. The per capita income for the township is $42,150. 2.6% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.4% are under the age of 18 and 2.6% are 65 or older.Education
On the island, there are two elementary schools: Parke Lane Elementary, and Meridian Elementary, serving grades K-5. The Grosse Ile Middle School enrolls students in 6-8, and Grosse Ile High School (GIHS) provides college prepatory education for grades 9-12. Their mascot is a Red Devil.Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 10,894 people, 4,122 households, and 3,293 families residing in the township. The population density is 437.7/km² (1,133.9/mi²). There are 4,335 housing units at an average density of 174.2/km² (451.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.23% White, 0.36% African American, 0.34% Native American, 2.74% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
