Heflin is a city located in Cleburne County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 3,002. The city is the county seat of Cleburne County.

Geography

\nHeflin is located at 33°38'37.514" North, 85°34'57.724" West (33.643754, -85.582701). According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.1 km² (12.0 mi²). 30.6 km² (11.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.50% water.

Demographics

census2 of 2000, there are 3,002 people, 1,218 households, and 824 families residing in the city. The population density is 98.1/km² (254.0/mi²). There are 1,330 housing units at an average density of 43.4/km² (112.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.88% White, 11.83% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,218 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.94. In the city the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males.
