Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 7,141 people, 2,495 households, and 1,941 families residing in the town. The population density is 170.4/km² (441.4/mi²). There are 2,590 housing units at an average density of 61.8/km² (160.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.60% White, 0.27% African American, 2.86% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,495 households out of which 47.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% are non-families. 16.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.23. In the town the population is spread out with 34.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 33.7% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $38,147, and the median income for a family is $41,993. Males have a median income of $32,343 versus $21,112 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,349. 7.4% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.4% are under the age of 18 and 5.9% are 65 or older.
