In 1779 the northeastern part of Hertford County was combined with parts of Chowan County and Perquimans County to form Gates County.
There are 8,953 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.80% are married couples living together, 19.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $26,422, and the median income for a family is $32,002. Males have a median income of $26,730 versus $20,144 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,641. 18.30% of the population and 15.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.30% are under the age of 18 and 21.00% are 65 or older.
