The Houston Zoo was first established in September 1922 in the Sam Houston Park. The zoo was started when Houston schoolchildren bought two ostriches.
It was later moved to the Hermann Park area, where it resides today. The zoo did not have admission fees until 1988, when they were first established.
The Zoo has 3,100 animals that belong to 500 species.
The zoo is served by an offsite light rail station on the Red Line of the METRORail light rail system.
