Howard Baker
Howard Baker, Jr. is the
United States ambassador to
Japan. He was appointed by President
George W. Bush in
2001.
Baker, a Republican from Tennessee, was formerly a US Senator. Baker served in the US Senate from 1967-85, with two terms as minority leader (1977-81) and two terms as majority leader (1981-85). He served as Chief of Staff in the administration of President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989).
Since 1996 Baker has been married to former US Senator Nancy Landon Kassebaum.
