1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 124.5 km² (48.1 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 112.8 km² (43.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 90.62% water.

census of 2000, there are 4,846 people, 2,827 households, and 1,749 families residing in the town. The population density is 414.9/km² (1,074.1/mi²). There are 5,889 housing units at an average density of 504.2/km² (1,305.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.95% White, 0.14% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
