Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee
Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR) is the oldest Engineering college in
India and perhaps even in the whole of British
Commonwealth located in Roorkee in the Indian state of
Uttar Pradesh . Established in
1847 as
Thomason College of Engineering the institute has remained among the most highly regarded technical colleges in the country. The name was later changed from Thomason College to
University of Roorkee with an accompanying upgradation to the status of a
university. In year 2001, the university was christened as an
Indian Institute of Technology.
The Institute is home to 18 departments offering both graduate and undergraduate courses in various disciplines of science and technology. In addition to the main campus at Roorkee, the college has campuses located at Saharanpur and Noida.
