He first married, in 1221, Eleanor, daughter of Alfonso VIII of Castile, and then, in 1235, Violant of Hungary, daughter of Andreas II of Hungary. He conquered Valencia and the Balearic Islands, and divided his domains between his two sons: Peter II of Aragon, who got most of them, and the younger James II of Majorca, who got Roussillon and the Balearic Islands.
