Kaminski attended Columbia College in Chicago from 1982 to 1987 before transfering to The American Film Institute, where he graduated. He took up film making as a profession at Columbia College after emmigrating to the US at 21. He was born in Ziembice, Poland. He is married to Holly Hunter, an American actress.
