Jerome is a city located in Jerome County, Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,780. The city is the county seat of Jerome County6.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 7,780 people, 2,776 households, and 1,959 families residing in the city. The population density is 938.7/km² (2,431.6/mi²). There are 2,966 housing units at an average density of 357.9/km² (927.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.47% White, 0.18% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 9.64% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 16.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,776 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.32. In the city the population is spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,074, and the median income for a family is $34,046. Males have a median income of $26,000 versus $19,162 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,023. 15.5% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.8% are under the age of 18 and 12.3% are 65 or older.
