Jim Crow etiquette

Jim Crow etiquette was a set of unwritten social rules governing how blacks and whites should interact in the pre-integration South of the USA. In essence, blacks were required to be deferential to whites at all times.

Whereas the explicit Jim Crow laws carried legal consequences for violation, Jim Crow etiquette was informally enforced by the good ol' boy network, with violators subject to beatings or even lynching.
