Established in 1981 through the amalgamation of Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS) with Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), it has 7,000 students, 800 teaching staff.
It is controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Institute's purpose is to provide highly qualified scientists and engineers, to perform mid- to long-term basic and applied research, and to provide a research platform for other institutions.
It is regarded as comparable to the top 25% of US universities for undergraduate courses and the top 10% for post-graduate work.
