Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,888 km² (729 mi²). 1,870 km² (722 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.95% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 10,692 people, 3,951 households, and 2,868 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 4,709 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.01% White, 0.96% Black or African American, 19.42% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 5.91% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,951 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 11.40% from 18 to 24, 24.20% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $23,962, and the median income for a family is $29,661. Males have a median income of $27,449 versus $19,577 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,842. 22.70% of the population and 19.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.70% are under the age of 18 and 16.40% are 65 or older.
