\nLauderdale County was established on February 6, 1818.
Geography
\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,862 km² (719 mi²). 1,734 km² (669 mi²) of it is land and 128 km² (49 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.86% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 87,966 people, 36,088 households, and 25,153 families residing in the county. The population density is 51/km² (131/mi²). There are 40,424 housing units at an average density of 23/km² (60/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.38% White, 9.85% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 36,088 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.80% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.89.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $33,354, and the median income for a family is $41,438. Males have a median income of $33,943 versus $20,804 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,626. 14.40% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.50% are under the age of 18 and 11.30% are 65 or older.
