The town of Lebanon was chartered on July 4th 1776. The town was named for Lebanon, Connecticut. The early settlment of the region was all throughout the areas now occupied by Lebanon, West Lebanon, and Enfield, however the town gained its centre in Lebanon because the drop in the Mascoma River at that location was most sufficient for milling. The town became an important manufacturing centre and an important railroad hub when the railroad from boston came through, making a local hub at West Lebanon, which became known as Westboro, after two trains colided because of West Lebanon being mistaken for Lebanon. The town has suffered two major fires, of which the second, in 1964 destroyed a large portion of the old manufacturing district of town. This resulted in "The Mall" which was built to replace the portions of Hanover Street that were destroyed in the fire.
