Lee County, North Carolina

History

The county was formed in 1907 from parts of Chatham County and Moore County. It was named for Robert E. Lee, commanding general of the Confederate forces during the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 672 km² (259 mi²). 666 km² (257 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.80% water.

The county is divided into seven townships, which are both numbered and named: 1 (Greenwood), 2 (Jonesboro), 3 (Cape Fear), 4 (Deep River), 5 (East Sanford), 6 (West Sanford), and 7 (Pocket).

As of the
census2 of 2000, there are 49,040 people, 18,466 households, and 13,369 families residing in the county. The population density is 74/km² (191/mi²). There are 19,909 housing units at an average density of 30/km² (77/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.03% White, 20.46% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 7.33% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 11.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,466 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 13.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,900, and the median income for a family is $45,373. Males have a median income of $32,780 versus $23,660 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,147. 12.80% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.50% are under the age of 18 and 12.20% are 65 or older.
