Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,060 km² (2,340 mi²). 5,986 km² (2,311 mi²) of it is land and 74 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.22% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 10,184 people, 4,151 households, and 2,914 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 5,298 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.64% White, 0.23% Black or African American, 1.63% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 1.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,151 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.90% are married couples living together, 6.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.91. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 5.20% from 18 to 24, 23.20% from 25 to 44, 27.40% from 45 to 64, and 19.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,255, and the median income for a family is $41,269. Males have a median income of $31,086 versus $22,444 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,888. 12.60% of the population and 8.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 7.70% are 65 or older.
