Linseed oil
Linseed oil is an
oil derived from the
flax plant (
Linum usitatissimum, Linaceae). It is obtained by pressing, followed by an optional stage of solvent extraction.
Its uses include:
- Animal feeds
- Putty
- Sealants
- Caulking compounds
- Brake linings
- Linoleum
- Textiles
- Foundry products
- Leather treatment
- Polisheses, varnishes and oil paints
- Animal care products
- Wood preservation
The linoleic acid in linseed oil is used as a
dietary supplement.
Safety Note: Rags soaked in linseed oil can self-ignite if stored in a confined space. They should be washed with water and disposed of carefully.
