Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Liverpool John Lennon Airport (
IATA Airport Code LPL) is a fairly sized aviation facility in
Liverpool. It was named after the late
John Lennon, a founding member of
Liverpudlian music group
The Beatles, in
2000, twenty years after Lennon's murder. Before this, the
airport used to be known as
Speke.
On the roof is painted the airport's motto, a line from Lennon's song, Imagine: "Above us, only sky".
Although such local airlines as BEA and later British Airways have served from time to time, the airport is basically a charter airline haven. It is capable of accepting all kinds of jets.
