Lough Derg
Lough Derg is the largest lake in the
Republic of Ireland. It borders parts of
Galway,
Clare, and
Tipperary.
Lough Derg is also the name of a smaller lake in
County Donegal. This Lough Derg has an island called Station Island, which has been a place of pilgrimage since ancient times. It is also called St. Patrick's Purgatory and is very busy to this day.
Here pilgrims are barefoot and fast on black tea/coffee and dry toast (one meal per day) for the 3 day pilgrimage. There are penitential beds that are part of the stations that pilgrims perform.
