Lower Silesia (German Niederschlesien, Polish: Dolny Slask) was a province of Prussia which together with Upper Silesia (Oberschlesien) formed part of Germany until the end of World War II. However, some parts went to Czechoslovakia after World War I. Most of Silesia was ceded by Austria to Prussia in 1742, and in 1919 divided into Upper and Lower Silesia. The capital of Lower Silesia was Breslau (now Wroclaw). The province was further divided into two administrative regions (Regierungsbezirke), Breslau and Liegnitz(Polish: Legnica). Now it lies mainly in Poland and with parts in the German state of Saxony. See also Lower Silesia.
