Lower Swatara Township, Pennsylvania

Lower Swatara Township is a township located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 8,149.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 38.3 km² (14.8 mi²). 31.4 km² (12.1 mi²) of it is land and 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.11% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 8,149 people, 3,003 households, and 2,201 families residing in the township. The population density is 259.6/km² (672.3/mi²). There are 3,124 housing units at an average density of 99.5/km² (257.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 93.70% White, 3.07% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.53% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,003 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.94. In the township the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males. The median income for a household in the township is $48,940, and the median income for a family is $58,203. Males have a median income of $39,980 versus $29,436 for females. The per capita income for the township is $23,271. 5.1% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.9% are under the age of 18 and 3.5% are 65 or older.
