In the early 1960s, the Partido Africano da Independência de Guiné e Cabo Verde began a war that eventually expelled Portuguese colonialists. Guinea-Bissau gained independence in 1974 and Cabral was installed as the country's executive. Because of the regional economic turmoil and the program of socialist repression carried out by Cabral's government, he was overthrown in 1980 by João Bernardo Vieira.
