During World War II, the facility was used to train Marines for service in the Pacific theater, and also served as a base for anti-submarine operations. Cherry Point also assisted during the Korean War by deploying three A-6 Intruder squadrons to the Far East.
Today, MCAS Cherry Point is the largest Marine Corps air station in the world. It boasts four EA-6B Prowler squadrons, four AV-8B Harrier squadrons, one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) squadron and one C-130 squadron.
