History
\nMartin County was created in 1925. It was named for John W. Martin, Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929.
Geography
\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,950 km² (753 mi²). 1,439 km² (556 mi²) of it is land and 511 km² (197 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 26.19% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 126,731 people, 55,288 households, and 36,213 families residing in the county. The population density is 88/km² (228/mi²). There are 65,471 housing units at an average density of 46/km² (118/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.88% White, 5.27% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 2.72% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 7.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 55,288 households out of which 21.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.50% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.71.
In the county the population is spread out with 18.60% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 28.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $43,083, and the median income for a family is $53,244. Males have a median income of $36,133 versus $27,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $29,584. 8.80% of the population and 5.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.80% are under the age of 18 and 5.20% are 65 or older.
