Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 60.4 km² (23.3 mi²). 42.7 km² (16.5 mi²) of it is land and 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.36% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 6,268 people, 2,532 households, and 1,769 families residing in the town. The population density is 146.9/km² (380.4/mi²). There are 3,172 housing units at an average density of 74.3/km² (192.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.51% White, 0.62% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,532 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 25.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.9 males.
