The term has Phoenician and Greek origins.
Since 11th Century the term Maure is used for the symbol of an African head or anything which is black and represents Africa.

Maure in Corsica's Coat-of-Arms
According to AUF, in Corsica a female Maure was used since 1281. Also used during the struggle for independence in 1736 and in Corsican currency.
