- 1455 - Wars of the Roses: Battle of St Albans - Richard, Duke of York defeat and capture King Henry VI of England.
- 1807 - Sufficient evidence is presented to a grand jury to indict former Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr for treason.
- 1819 - The SS Savannah leaves port at Savannah, Georgia on a voyage to become the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The ship will arrive at Liverpool, England on June 20.
- 1843 - The first major wagon train headed for the Northwest sets out with one thousand pioneers from Elm Grove, Missouri on the Oregon Trail.
- 1856 - Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina beats Senator Charles Sumner with a cane in the hall of the United States Senate for a speech Sumner had made attacking Southerners who sympathized with the pro-slavery violence in Kansas ("Bleeding Kansas"). Sumner was unable to return to duty for three years while he recovered. Brooks became a hero across the South.
