\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,488 km² (575 mi²). 1,123 km² (433 mi²) of it is land and 365 km² (141 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 24.56% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,847 people, 4,202 households, and 3,012 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 5,735 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 61.34% White, 36.81% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,202 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are married couples living together, 14.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $30,102, and the median income for a family is $34,363. Males have a median income of $29,782 versus $19,598 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,253. 18.70% of the population and 15.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.10% are under the age of 18 and 16.90% are 65 or older.
