census of 2000, there are 3,099 people, 1,172 households, and 732 families residing in the town. The population density is 586.5/km² (1,517.4/mi²). There are 1,236 housing units at an average density of 233.9/km² (605.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.03% White, 0.90% African American, 0.03% Native American, 3.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,172 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.85. In the town the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 31.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 70.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 63.8 males.
