Meknes started its life in the 8th century as a Kasbah or fort. In the 10th century a town grew around the fortress with the settlement of a Berber tribe called Maknassa. Meknes saw it's golden age following the acession to the throne of Morocco of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672 - 1727), who made the town his imperial capital.
