His father, the late Roy Jackson, was an archdeacon.
Jackson was born in Lurgan, and educated at Ballinamallard Primary School, Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and Trinity College, Dublin, before going on to do postgraduate studies in Cambridge.
He married Inez Cooke, a medical doctor who was born in County Fermanagh, and they have one daughter, named Camilla, born circa 1991.
Jackson succeeded Brian Hannon as Bishop of Clogher upon being elected by the Church of Ireland House of Bishops at their meeting in Dublin on November 21, 2001. However, he did not take up his appointment for several months, being consecrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh on March 6, 2002.
Jackson's Roman Catholic counterpart is Joseph Duffy, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Clogher. In 2002, Duffy and Jackson delivered a joint Christmas message.
