He was elected in March of 2000 for the sixth term of the Islamic Republic's parliment's election as the first MP of Tehran with more than a million votes from the people of Tehran. Before that, he had been deputy minister in the Ministry of Health for two years.
His higher education is in medicine and before entering the world of politics he was a practicing urologist for a number of years.
In 1983, he married Zahra Eshraghi, granddaughter of Ruhollah Khomeini (founder of the Islamic republic), and an activist in women's rights. They have two children - a daughter, Fatemeh, and a son, Ali.
