Mokele mbembe
Mokele mbembe is alleged to be a dinosaur-like creature currently living in
Africa. Some
cryptozoologists believe that such a creature exists.
This belief has originated from the reports of the Bantu tribesmen, pygmies and other natives living in parts of
Cameroon and
Republic of the Congo. These people report sightings of long-necked, water-dwelling animals of gigantic sizes that occasionally kill people and hippopotami the venture too close. The name
mokele m'bembe translates as
the one that stops the flow of rivers.
Some scholars suppose that the creature might be a type of dinosaur that could have survived the mass extinction of the dinosaurs that is believed to have occurred about 65 million years ago. Eye-witness accounts suggest that the creature bears most resemblence with prosauropods.
So far, scientists have failed to find a reliable evidence for the existence of a creature corresponding to the native legend, although casts of inexplicable footprints have been taken, which some say were made by the mokele.
According to other reports, a South American variant might exist, as well.
