According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²). 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 60.98% water, which is apparently a quirk of the way the census tracks are configured, as no significant part of Mokulē'ia is actually water, assuming as would be logical that the "town" ends at the beach (shoreline).
