In early November 2003, the largest hepatitis A outbreak in American history occurred due to unsanitary conditions at a restaurant in the Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca. There were at least 530 confirmed cases, three of which died.

Monaca is located at 40°41'2" North, 80°16'37" West (40.683966, -80.276986)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.40% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 6,286 people, 2,709 households, and 1,741 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,161.3/km² (3,004.0/mi²). There are 2,892 housing units at an average density of 534.3/km² (1,382.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 97.12% White, 1.94% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,709 households out of which 26.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the borough the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males.
