Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,723 km² (665 mi²). 1,222 km² (472 mi²) of it is land and 500 km² (193 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.04% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 615,301 people, 224,236 households, and 160,328 families residing in the county. The population density is 503/km² (1,304/mi²). There are 240,884 housing units at an average density of 197/km² (510/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.39% White, 8.06% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 3.97% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.74% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 6.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 224,236 households out of which 35.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.24. In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $64,271, and the median income for a family is $76,823. Males have a median income of $55,030 versus $35,415 for females. The per capita income for the county is $31,149. 6.30% of the population and 4.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.50% are under the age of 18 and 7.00% are 65 or older.
