\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,350 km² (521 mi²). 1,346 km² (520 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,595 people, 2,526 households, and 1,763 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (13/mi²). There are 2,745 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.91% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 12.01% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,526 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.12.
In the county, the population is spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.00 males.
