Mount Carmel Township is a township located in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,701.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 57.0 km² (22.0 mi²). 56.5 km² (21.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.82% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 2,701 people, 1,086 households, and 729 families residing in the township. The population density is 47.8/km² (123.8/mi²). There are 1,250 housing units at an average density of 22.1/km² (57.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 99.56% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. 0.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,086 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.93. In the township the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 25.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.3 males. The median income for a household in the township is $28,438, and the median income for a family is $35,847. Males have a median income of $31,713 versus $23,047 for females. The per capita income for the township is $15,376. 10.8% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line.
