Neutral Milk Hotel
Neutral Milk Hotel, an outgrowth of the
Elephant six collective, was a band formed by
Jeff Mangum in the mid
1990s. Drawing on the
lo-fi sensibilities of indie rockers
Pavement and Sebadoh as well as elements of
folk and
psychedelic music, the band released two albums before going on permanent hiatus in
2000. Neutral Milk Hotel's second LP,
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was highly praised by critics for its wildly inventive instrumentation and Mangum's eccentric lyrics. Although it met with scant response from the general public when it was released in
1997, the LP has continued to gain momentum in indie music circles and seems poised to become a cult classic.
