New Haven County, Connecticut

New Haven County is located in the south central part of the U.S. State of Connecticut. As of 2000 the population was 824,008. The largest city is New Haven.

As is the case with all eight of Connecticut's counties, there is no county government, and no county seat. In Connecticut, towns are responsible for all local government activities, including fire and rescue, snow removal and schools. In a few cases, neighboring towns will share certain resources. However, New Haven County is merely a group of towns on a map, and has no particular authority.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,233 km² (862 mi²). 1,569 km² (606 mi²) of it is land and 664 km² (256 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.74% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 824,008 people, 319,040 households, and 210,566 families residing in the county. The population density is 525/km² (1,361/mi²). There are 340,732 housing units at an average density of 217/km² (563/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.40% White, 11.32% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.33% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 4.51% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 10.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 319,040 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.60% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.00% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $48,834, and the median income for a family is $60,549. Males have a median income of $43,643 versus $32,001 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,439. 9.50% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.00% are under the age of 18 and 7.70% are 65 or older.
