NJ Transit was founded in 1979 to take several over private bus companies. In 1983, it took over all commuter rail service in the state from CONRAIL. It now operates every bus, light rail and rail line in the state except the PATH trains, which are owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In recent years it is slowly being privatized.
In the 1990s, the system expanded, with new "MidTOWN DIRECT" service to New York and new equipment. In 2003, it will open the Secaucus Transfer superstation.
