New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority
The
New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or
MTA,, founded in
1965 operates the transporations systems for the New York state area including
MTA New York City Transit (NYC Transit Authority) or (TA), the 5th largest
metro system in the world (here called
subway), the largest bus and train
North America, the
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), Long Island Bus,
Metro-North Railroad (MNR),
Staten Island Railway until
1994 known as Staten Island Rapid Transit, and the
MTA Bridges and Tunnels, which operates the interborough bridges and tunnels.
The NYMTA is a commission under the state of New York. It is a state-run corporation.
