Oakville was first settled in 1807 by British immigrants, mainly those who left the United States during the Revolutionary War. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, farming and limited manufacturing sustained the local economy, but its proximity to Toronto and Hamilton made it an ideal spot for suburban housing construction in the 1950s and 1960s. The town is now little more than a suburb of Toronto and is part of the Greater Toronto Area.
