Geography
The city is situated in the beginning of Höga Kusten, which is a UNESCO World heritage site. The city is located around 100 km south of Umeå and 650 km north of Stockholm. The municipality is mainly forested with some farmland.
History
Örnsköldsvik was founded as a market town in 1842 and became a city in 1894. The name comes from Governor Per Abraham Örnsköld (1762-1769). There are traces of human activity from as early as 7000-8000 years ago.
Education
In Örnsköldsvik there are two universities at present, Mid-Sweden University College and Umeå University, where the university college is the larger one, and university which has most of its students in Umeå.
