Operation Gauntlet
During
World War II,
Operation Gauntlet was a raid by British, Canadian and Norwegian
commandos on the Norwegian island of
Spitzbergen, north of the Arctic Circle to destroy German port facilities and naval stores.
An additional objective was the rescue of over two thousand Soviet citizens and some Allied prisoners. Executed on 27 August, 1941.
