Operation Savannah

During World War II, Operation Savannah was the first insertion of a British special warfare team into German-occupied France; conducted on the night of 15 March, 1941 near Vannes.

The five commandos failed in their mission to ambush a bus carrying German pilots, but they were extracted successfully by light plane without being detected.

This mission demonstrated the practicality of using airdrops and covert landings by aircraft to insert, supply and recover small units behind German lines.
