Orangeburg, South Carolina
Orangeburg is a city located in
Orangeburg County, South Carolina. As of the
2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,765. It is the
county seat of
Orangeburg County6.
A
civil rights protest was staged at a white-only bowling alley in Orangeburg. On
February 8,
1968 the protest was broken-up by highway patrolmen leading to the deaths of three college students.

2000, there are 12,765 people, 4,512 households, and 2,526 families residing in the city. The

Native American, 1.14%
Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are

There are 4,512 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.5% are married couples living together, 18.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.0% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the city the population is spread out with 17.7% under the age of 18, 28.6% from 18 to 24, 21.0% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older.
