Order of St Patrick
The
Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick was the highest Order of Chivalry in
Ireland, akin to the
Order of the Garter in
England and the
Order of the Thistle in
Scotland. It was established in
1783. THe order became moribund with the creation of the
Irish Free State in
1922, and the last Knight, the
Duke of Gloucester, died in
1974. The order had only one grade, Knight, with postnominal initials
KP. The Chapel of the Order was at
St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.
